An elusive Malayan tiger has made an appearance in Yala’s Bang Lang National Park, a sighting confirmed by the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

Officials said the species, distinguished by its geographic specificity, typically roams the southern border regions of Thailand and into Malaysia, with its presence in Thailand usually confined to just Bang Lang National Park and the Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary.

The department credits the innovative ‘Smart Patrol’ system for this rare discovery. The system, which has been implemented to enhance the conservation and surveillance of wildlife, played a crucial role in identifying the tiger, now cataloged as “Bang Lang 01.”

The DNP noted that camera trapping is among its key tools in modern conservation, offering a glimpse into the lives of shy or rare animals without human disturbance. The data collected from such sightings helps inform protection strategies for the Malayan tiger and the broader ecosystem it inhabits. (NNT)
