BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s tourist destinations are facing renewed concern over the recreational misuse of “laughing gas,” or nitrous oxide, which is sometimes sold to foreign visitors seeking a quick high. Nitrous oxide is widely used for legitimate medical and industrial purposes, but inhaling the gas for entertainment can cause serious health problems. What may appear to be harmless fun can interfere with the nervous system and, in severe cases, become life-threatening.
The substance is sometimes offered in entertainment areas frequented by tourists, where brightly packaged nitrous oxide canisters or balloons may be marketed as a novelty experience. Visitors unfamiliar with the risks may not realize that recreational inhalation can lead to oxygen deprivation, loss of consciousness and neurological damage. Health authorities have stressed that nitrous oxide is not intended to be inhaled for recreational purposes. Repeated or heavy use can also interfere with vitamin B12 metabolism, potentially causing nerve and spinal cord damage.
Thai authorities also do not allow nitrous oxide to be supplied or used for recreational purposes. Those found illegally possessing, selling or distributing the substance may face hefty fines or imprisonment under applicable laws. The issue is particularly relevant to Thailand’s major tourist destinations, where nightlife and entertainment venues attract large numbers of international visitors. The availability of the substance as a recreational product can create risks for both tourists and local communities. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preventing misuse and ensuring that visitors understand the potential dangers.
