Immigration officers arrest an Indian national in Nonthaburi following a complaint from a Thai woman he met through a dating app, leading to an overstay investigation.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Immigration police in Nonthaburi have arrested a 28-year-old Indian national for overstaying his visa by 1,201 days, following a complaint filed by a Thai woman who said she supported him financially after meeting him through an online dating application. The suspect, identified as Mr. Gurvinder Singh, was detained at a condominium in Bang Kruai district after officers confirmed that his permission to stay in Thailand had expired in March 2023.

Authorities said the case began after the woman, a 34-year-old government officer identified as “Ms. Dao” (alias), filed a complaint alleging that she had been in a relationship with the man for around three years. She claimed he had initially introduced himself online as a well-educated student from Singapore with a privileged background and family wealth. According to her statement, the man later moved to Thailand and lived with her, but allegedly did not seek employment or contribute financially, leaving her to shoulder living expenses over an extended period.

She later sought assistance from immigration authorities, prompting an investigation that led to his arrest.

Ms. Dao also said she decided to report the situation after feeling she had been misled and financially burdened, and warned others to be cautious when using dating applications.

The suspect told officers that he originally came to Thailand after studying abroad and did not renew his visa. He said he had limited funds after leaving Singapore and later experienced financial difficulties. He also claimed he had not left the residence due to concerns about being arrested.

He added that he still had contact with his family in India but said he was no longer supported by them. Police have charged him under immigration laws for overstaying his permitted stay. He has been handed over to Bang Kruai Police Station for legal proceedings and will be deported following completion of the case.
