BANGKOK – The government and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will strictly enforce the law during the New Year festivities. Authorities will take legal action against those who violate the law in a bid to reduce accidents.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said measures are needed in order to ensure that the law is strictly being enforced and that transport operators and drivers who violate the law will be prosecuted. The prime minister said the strict enforcement is aimed at instilling a greater sense of responsibility among the public. The Ministry of Culture has launched a campaign “Saying Love to Safe Driving by Thais” to raise awareness on the need to reduce the number of road accidents during the New Year celebrations.

The prime minister expressed his condolences over the death of 14 Chinese tourists that were killed in a road accident in Chiang Mai and said the government will facilitate the return of the victims’ bodies to the country of origin.

Spokesman Col Winthai Suwaree said that during the New Year holiday the Peace and Order Maintaining Command will join hands with the Royal Thai Police, related authorities and the public sector to provide security measures. Inspection and facilitation centers will be set up along the country’s important transportation routes since December 25th until the end of the New Year holiday.
