Satellite mapping from GISTDA highlights high-risk flood zones in Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, and Bangkok as rising Chao Phraya Dam discharge threatens riverside communities, prompting residents to secure belongings and stay alert.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) has identified areas in Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, and Bangkok that may face increased flood risk due to the rising discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam. The agency reports that communities located along the Chao Phraya River and its tributary canals, particularly those outside official flood barriers, will require heightened vigilance.

According to GISTDA, the higher discharge levels have already resulted in rising river water levels, increasing the likelihood of overflow into surrounding neighborhoods. High tide conditions are also expected to complicate drainage efforts, especially in riverside zones within the greater Bangkok metropolitan area.

Satellite-based flood risk mapping shows that areas marked in orange are likely to experience flooding if the discharge rate remains at 2,700 cubic meters per second. If the rate increases to 2,800 cubic meters per second, additional areas marked in red are projected to be affected.

In Pathum Thani, flood risk zones are concentrated along both banks of the Chao Phraya River, from Sam Khok District down to Mueang Pathum Thani. In Nonthaburi, low-lying riverside areas, including Pak Kret and Bang Kruai, may experience rising water levels. In Bangkok, districts such as Bang Phlat, Bangkok Noi, Bangkok Yai, and Thonburi remain areas of concern. Most of the vulnerable zones are outside reinforced flood protection lines.

Residents living near the river, especially in areas flagged as orange and red on GISTDA’s risk map, are advised to move belongings to higher ground and stay updated through official channels. GISTDA confirmed that satellite monitoring will continue to support government planning and response measures. (NNT)
