BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has partnered with Le Cordon Bleu Dusit to promote Geographical Indication (GI) products by incorporating them as ingredients in culinary training courses. This collaboration aims to build awareness of the value and unique identity of Thai local ingredients, thereby increasing their value and expanding trade opportunities in the international market.
Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, Nusara Kanjanagul, revealed that the department has registered more than 237 GI products across Thailand, generating a market value of over 82 billion baht. She noted that 83% of these are food and agricultural products with unique characteristics tied to their geographical origins and local culture. This makes GI products high-quality ingredients that can tell compelling stories within the food industry.
The department recognized the opportunity to integrate GI products into the culinary world through its collaboration with Le Cordon Bleu Dusit, a globally renowned culinary arts institute with a history of over 130 years. Using Thai GI food products as ingredients in its curriculum will not only help generate income for farmers and GI entrepreneurs but also introduce these Thai ingredients to an international audience. The institute’s student body includes both Thai and international students who will become key figures in the food industry, further spreading awareness of GI products through their culinary creations.
Additionally, the department and Le Cordon Bleu Dusit are preparing to launch a Plant-Based Cuisine course in October 2025 and a Plant-Based Pastry course in 2026. These courses are designed for those interested in plant-based cooking and learning international techniques, and will also feature GI products as key ingredients. (NNT)
