BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, is advancing a proactive strategy to strengthen Thai products through the Geographical Indications (GI) mechanism, guided by the principle of “quality first, marketing support second.” The initiative aims to boost grassroots economic development while enhancing the global competitiveness of Thai GI goods.
To safeguard standards, producers must implement approved quality control systems and undergo inspections before receiving authorization to use the Thai GI logo. The certification is valid for two years and is subject to renewal through re-evaluation. In parallel, authorized producers receive marketing and capacity-building support, including packaging development, trade fair participation, online sales channels, logistics cooperation with Thailand Post, and reinforcing transparency and consumer confidence.
Currently, 210 out of 252 registered Thai GI products have implemented formal quality control systems. More than 17,000 producers are authorized to use the Thai GI mark. In 2025 alone, over 5,000 producers applied to enter the quality control system and obtain GI logo authorization, reflecting growing confidence in the mechanism’s commercial value. As of 15 December 2025, a total of 23 new GI products were registered, generating more than 37 billion baht in market value. Looking ahead to 2026, the department aims to register 26 additional GI products from 23 provinces, projected to generate more than 2.6 billion baht in economic value.
Director-General Oramon Sapthaweetham said the GI mechanism is a long-term strategy to raise Thai products to international standards. “We are not only increasing the number of GI registrations, but ensuring that every product meets strict quality and traceability requirements. This strengthens consumer confidence, enhances competitiveness, and reinforces Thailand’s reputation for premium, origin-certified goods in global markets,” she said. (NNT)
