BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai has publicly dismissed rumors of tension between Thailand’s civilian leadership and the military over the handling of the border situation with Cambodia. In a Facebook post on June 2, Phumtham stated that the government and the armed forces are in full alignment, stressing their shared commitment to maintaining peace and protecting national sovereignty.
Phumtham addressed recent speculation suggesting he and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had instructed the military to halt any plans to close border checkpoints with Cambodia, causing unease within the armed forces. He clarified that ongoing discussions with the military have resulted in consensus: both sides agree that closing the border could trigger economic hardship and worsen the situation for local communities on both sides of the frontier.
He emphasized that despite the current tensions, both the Thai and Cambodian governments are working through diplomatic channels to de-escalate the dispute. The Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) remains the preferred mechanism to resolve border issues peacefully, with the government ready to host the next round of talks if Cambodia is not yet prepared.
Phumtham also assured the public that the military remains vigilant in defending Thailand’s territory, while acting with restraint to avoid unnecessary escalation. He concluded by reaffirming that the government’s approach is rooted in peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and a strong commitment to protecting the well-being of the people.
