BANGKOK, Thailand – A meal at a buffet restaurant in Thailand turned into a frightening ordeal after a customer suffered a severe electric shock from a faulty food warming tray, leaving her with nerve and muscle injuries and ongoing health problems. The name and location of the restaurant have not been disclosed. The incident was shared online as a warning to diners and restaurant operators after the Facebook page “Drama-addict” posted details of the case on July 10. The incident reportedly happened on July 1 at around 4:50pm when the woman visited the buffet restaurant. While using a stainless-steel ladle to serve green curry from a heated food tray, she was suddenly struck by an electric current, causing chest pain and violent shaking.

Restaurant staff reportedly tested the equipment after the incident and also received an electric shock. The restaurant then arranged for the woman to be taken to a hospital about 10 kilometers away under her social security medical coverage. Doctors monitored her condition in the emergency room before providing pain medication and allowing her to recover at home. However, her symptoms did not improve the following day. Her family took her to a nearby private hospital for further examination, where specialist doctors reportedly found that her nerves and muscles had suffered damage.

Doctors could not determine when she would fully recover, saying she would require continued treatment. The woman continues to experience symptoms including hand tremors and chest tightness, affecting her daily life, work and ability to care for her child. Following the incident, the restaurant inspected the food warming equipment and reportedly admitted that it was damaged and had caused an electrical leak. The restaurant offered initial compensation, including one free meal, 5,000 baht in compensation and responsibility for medical expenses based on actual costs. However, the victim’s family said the offer was inadequate and did not reflect the impact of the incident, including missed work, repeated medical appointments and the emotional stress experienced by the family. The person who shared the story urged restaurant operators to prioritize customer safety by regularly inspecting electrical systems and equipment to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
