BANGKOK, 31 July 2015 – Rain yesterday brought real hope to people living in twenty two drought-affected provinces in the Chao Phraya River Basin as it brought over fifty one million cubic meters more of water to main dams within a single day, reveals Deputy government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

Such a considerable amount of rainfall in a day was very satisfactory. He continued “compared to rainfall during the whole past week which brought only 202.73 million cubic meters to dams. Back in the first two week of July, there were only a hundred million cubic meters of water flowing into the dams, around seven to eight million a day on average.”

As a result, he said the Royal Irrigation Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has increased the rate of daily water release by one million cubic meters, from eighteen to nineteen million. The released water flowed to devastated agricultural lands and helped revive them. At the same time, more rain in various areas has mitigated the impact of the drought situation considerably.

Despite the better water situation in Thailand, Sansern emphasized that the government still requests the public to continue using water economically. He noted that water saving measures should be observed regularly regardless of the water situation as water is a valuable natural resource.
