All 50 district offices have been instructed to enforce permit rules for fireworks and sky lanterns, allowing authorized displays only from 11:00 p.m. on Dec 31 to 1:00 a.m. on Jan 1 to ensure public safety during the year-end holidays.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Bangkok has directed all 50 district offices to strictly enforce measures to control fireworks and sky lanterns during the New Year period, prioritizing public safety.

Permanent Secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Narong Rueangsri stated that the extended year-end holiday increases the risk to life and property due to the widespread use of fireworks, rockets, sky lanterns, and similar devices. Previous incidents have shown that these activities often cause explosions and fires.

To prevent hazards and minimize losses, the BMA has instructed all district offices to strictly enforce permit requirements for fireworks and related objects, whether used by the public or event organizers. All approvals must comply with regulatory criteria to ensure safe New Year celebrations throughout Bangkok.

The measures are based on the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Ordinance on the Prevention and Resolution of Public Disturbance and Hazards from Fireworks, Sky Lanterns, and Similar Objects B.E. 2561 (2018). The ordinance prohibits the launching of fireworks, rockets, sky lanterns, or smoke lanterns into the air without prior authorization from the relevant district director.

Applicants must meet specified qualifications and submit permit requests at least 15 days in advance, including safety plans and site layout maps. Authorized fireworks displays for the New Year are allowed only on December 31, from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on January 1.

Violations of the ordinance may result in imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both. (NNT)
