BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has clarified Thailand’s position following today’s (Dec 16) National Security Council meeting, saying the council’s secretary-general will soon provide further briefings on the security situation. The premier, during a press interview, addressed several issues related to recent developments along the Thailand–Cambodia border.

Anutin addressed reports of fuel trucks at the Chong Mek checkpoint in Ubon Ratchathani province, saying the shipments were bound for the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and not Cambodia. He reiterated that Thailand cannot legally restrict exports that are properly documented and destined for the neighboring nation.

On Cambodia’s outreach to international platforms over alleged military actions by Thailand, Anutin said the circumstances and types of weapons involved should be examined. He referred to reports of BM-21 rocket fire toward Thailand and said such information should be assessed in context.

The prime minister declined to comment on reports that trade measures mentioned by U.S. President Donald Trump were intended to encourage a ceasefire, saying he was not aware of any external pressure. He also chose not to respond to remarks by China’s foreign minister calling on both sides to halt hostilities.

Regarding a possible ceasefire, Anutin said Cambodia should be encouraged to cease military action first, reiterating that Thailand has not initiated hostilities. He added that Thailand remains prepared to clarify its position through diplomatic channels and continues to support a peaceful resolution to the situation. (NNT)
