Following talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, the prime minister says Cambodia breached prior commitments, including alleged new mine-laying, and stresses Thailand’s response is lawful, defensive, and aimed at protecting sovereignty and civilians.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the media following discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. He reaffirmed Thailand’s compliance with all relevant declarations and agreements and stated that Cambodia had violated these arrangements first by failing to withdraw forces, planting landmines, and carrying out attacks that caused Thai casualties, injuries, and property damage.

The Prime Minister stated that Thailand’s response was necessary to protect national sovereignty and public safety. He emphasized that Thailand was acting in self-defense within its legitimate rights and urged the international community to consider information from the affected party.

Anutin requested that the United States convey to the other party that any ceasefire must be explicit and include both a withdrawal of forces and a halt to all mine planting. He noted that Thailand has evidence of new landmines in disputed areas and reiterated that those who violate agreements should be responsible for rectifying the situation.

Regarding domestic politics, the Prime Minister stated that election matters should not be connected to national security developments. He noted that while the U.S. President requested close coordination with Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the Thai side assured that they are managing the situation and that discussions are ongoing at all levels.

The Prime Minister referenced a joint declaration for peace, but stated that Cambodia has continued to violate these understandings through provocative actions, including the alleged planting of new mines. He affirmed that Thailand must protect its personnel and citizens.

He stated that the armed forces have clear operational plans, while the government is focused on policy direction to de-escalate the situation in the national interest.

On trade issues, he said President Trump confirmed that the border situation is not connected to trade tariff discussions and that the matter would be expedited following previous delays.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Thailand’s adherence to international law and stated that he had discussed the situation with armed forces commanders and the Permanent Secretary for Defense, noting their alignment in supporting policies to safeguard national interests. (NNT)
