BANGKOK, 29 April 2011  – One Thai soldier was killed and six others were injured in renewed gunfights at the Thai-Cambodian border although both the Thai and Cambodian armies have agreed on a one-day ceasefire starting Thursday afternoon.

Army Spokesperson Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd reported that the Cambodian troops had been opening fire against the Thai side along the border continuously since last night until dawn despite the ceasefire agreement. The development killed one soldier and wounded six others.

Meanwhile, Second Army Region Commander Lieutenant-General Thawatchai Samutsakorn stated that the shootings last night took place near Prasat Ta Kwai and Prasat Ta Muen Thom in Surin province.

Lieutenant General Thawatchai continued that he had been coordinating with Cambodian Fourth Army Region Commander Lieutenant General Chea Mon for the whole night to stop the gunfire, but the latter claimed that his subordinates did not open fire against the Thai troops.

The second army region commander said he believed that Lieutenant General Chea Mon did not lie, but there might be some communication hiccups between the Cambodian commander and his troops stationing in the border area so he would give the Cambodian side more time.
