Monday, Jan. 28, Green Valley (white tees) – Monthly Medal

1st Michael Hastie (19) net 73

2nd Murray Hart (14) net 73

3rd Brent Philp (15) net 74

It’s always a good turnout for Green Valley on Mondays, and when that is combined with our Monthly Medal, everyone in town shows up.

It was a bit of a rough old time for Phil today, as groups had to be shuffled around as some balked at the rain and never showed up, others started then stopped after a few holes, and even more just waited it out and finished the round comfortably.

Rain is no reason to stop a competition.  If there is lightning present, then yes, play must be stopped.  Generally, we never get absolutely rained out here in Pattaya.  Just wait it out and you will see a gap in the weather to finish your round.  That is what Michael Hastie chose to do and was rewarded for the decision.  Michael has been a great help with our computer systems so a public thanks for that mate!  Hastie finished with a net 73 and won on count back over Murray Hart.

Third place went to our buddy Brent Philp (no relation to Billabong Bob!) who is on his annual snowbird migration from snowy Canada.  It is amazing how many guys from the Vancouver area visit us every year, and a great bunch of guys they are.

Our next Monthly Medal is on Wednesday the 27th February at Royal Lakeside, so pencil that date in on your schedule.

Wednesday, Jan. 30, Crystal Bay (white tees) – Stableford

1st Trevor Robins (21) 37pts

T2nd Phil Smedley (13) 35pts

T2nd Peter Hynard (13) 35pts

T2nd Stephen Blazsanyik (16) 35pts

Crystal Bay was our host for this Wednesday’s outing and once again we were full of mixed emotions.  This is a lovely track and in great condition, but it is so damn hard!  The greens were very quick, so a few three-putt adventures should not do your head in, as it will happen to most golfers on this course.

Only one of the pack, Trevor Robins, managed to shoot a better score than their handicap on this day and his achievement won a first place in today’s competition.  A trio of 35’s shared second place with Phil Smedley, Peter Hynard and Stephen Blazsanyik (86 Scrabble points!) all in the frame.  Thanks again for joining us for another great day of golf.

Friday, Feb. 1, Eastern Star (white tees) – Stableford

1st Pierre Cere (9) 35pts

2nd Ken Aihara (5) 32pts

3rd Phil Smedley (13) 32pts

It has been quite some time since we have been out to Eastern Star.  It’s not because we don’t like the course layout.  It’s not because we don’t like the price.  It has always been a point of contention that Eastern Star has some serious issues with maintenance and upkeep, so that is what has kept us clear for so long.

I remember the last time we played here I wrote of the poorly trained caddies who were just tearing up the fairways by driving the carts right through the muddiest and wettest parts of the course.  That will never win you any friends on the greenskeeping staff.  It seems a bit better now, so we will keep an eye on it and see how it goes.  This is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed golf course and I am sure he would wish they treated her like the star she could be.

Pierre Cere won here today, and the French-Canadian deserved the win as he was 3 shots ahead of the second place golfers.  Our Captain Phil Smedley and NFL crazy Ken Aihara tied with 32 Stableford points on their cards.  With any luck at all we will be back here, but this is a course you have to keep an eye out for.
