BANGKOK, Thailand – The National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council has approved three economic strategies to develop advanced industries, create higher-paying jobs, and increase agricultural value. Known as Siam Silica, Siam Medica, and Siam Terra, the strategies were endorsed at a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Prof. Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat on October 26, with 10 ministries involved.
Siam Silica will advance Thailand’s semiconductor industry, targeting eight chip design startups and centers by 2030. Siam Medica will expand healthcare and wellness through biotechnology, medical devices, and precision medicine, while Siam Terra will promote smart agriculture, advanced food production, and biotechnology.
The council also approved measures to expand the commercial use of university research, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies. Other projects include a Thai-developed wildfire detection system expected to become operational in February and plans for three Thai research projects to participate in NASA’s Artemis space exploration program.
Yodchanan made clear the importance of education reform, workforce training, and lifelong learning to prepare workers for emerging industries. The council also endorsed policy frameworks to coordinate efforts across 10 ministries, helping Thailand develop its own technologies and support long-term economic growth. (NNT)
