PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya beachgoers could face rough sea conditions and disrupted coastal activities as Thailand experiences heavy rain and stronger winds under the influence of the monsoon and Tropical Storm Narra. Thailand’s Meteorological Department warned on August 24 that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall could affect parts of the North, Central and Eastern regions. The conditions are being influenced by a monsoon trough over northern Thailand and upper Laos, combined with a relatively strong southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
Although Tropical Storm Narra is forecast to move inland over southern Guangxi, China, on August 24-25 and is not expected to enter Thailand or directly affect the country’s weather, the broader weather pattern could still bring unsettled conditions to coastal areas, including Pattaya. Winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea are expected to remain relatively strong, with waves reaching 2-3 metres and exceeding 3 metres in thunderstorms. Waves in the upper Gulf of Thailand are expected to reach around 2 metres, with higher waves possible in areas affected by thunderstorms.
The conditions could disrupt beach activities and water-based tourism in Pattaya and other eastern coastal destinations. Boaters are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas experiencing thunderstorms, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore.
Beachgoers in Pattaya should check local weather and sea conditions before heading out, particularly if planning swimming, boating or other activities on the water.
