KALASIN, Thailand – A grandmother and her teenage granddaughter were killed after their car lost control on a rain-soaked road and crashed into a roadside sign in Yang Talat district, Kalasin province, on July 12. Police from Non Sung Police Station were alerted to the accident on the Khon Kaen–Yang Talat road in Hua Na Kham sub-district. Emergency responders, rescue teams and medical personnel rushed to the scene after reports that a car had overturned with fatalities. At the scene, officers found a silver sedan overturned with its wheels facing upward in a field beside the road. The vehicle was heavily damaged, while two occupants had been thrown from the car and were found near a roadside sign.
The victims were identified as a 17-year-old granddaughter and her 63-year-old grandmother, both from Chiang Yuen district in neighboring Maha Sarakham province. Initial information indicated that the pair had left home in the morning to go to a market. After travelling about one kilometer, the vehicle reportedly lost control while driving through rain. Police believe the wet road conditions may have contributed to the crash, causing the car to leave the road, strike a sign and overturn.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the accident.
