PATTAYA, Thailand – Patong police have arrested seven French nationals for allegedly playing water during Songkran in a way that obstructed traffic, amid growing concerns from local businesses over foreign visitors disregarding public order rules during the festival.
The incident came to light after social media posts circulated widely, showing groups of tourists engaging in what was described as aggressive water play in Patong, Phuket, sparking public debate and criticism over safety and tourism management.
On April 14, Patong Police Station clarified that officers were alerted by residents to a group of foreign tourists gathering on Prachanukhro Road near Malin Market, where they were reportedly causing disruption and blocking traffic while playing water during Songkran festivities. Police said officers intervened, warned the group, and subsequently detained seven individuals, all French nationals, on charges of “causing public nuisance.” The suspects were taken to investigators for legal proceedings.
Authorities emphasized that the case was not related to any incident involving tourists spraying water at police officers at official Songkran service points, as had been incorrectly circulated online. They also noted that no formal complaints have been filed regarding a separate viral clip showing water being sprayed at a moving van.

Following the incident, police issued reminders to local businesses, vendors, and residents to avoid setting up water containers or playing water on sidewalks and roads in ways that obstruct traffic, in order to prevent repeat disturbances.
Meanwhile, local business leaders expressed concern over the incident. A representative of the Patong Beach Entertainment Business Association urged authorities to take stricter action against visitors who violate laws during Songkran, warning that unsafe behavior could deter future tourists. He also called for closer monitoring of foreign-run businesses in the area and suggested stricter enforcement measures to maintain order and protect Phuket’s tourism image.
Authorities said patrols and enforcement measures have been increased throughout the Songkran period to ensure public safety and maintain order for both residents and visitors.
Meanwhile in Pattaya, similar Songkran celebrations continue under strict crowd control and safety measures, particularly along Beach Road and nearby zones, where authorities are also monitoring water play activities to prevent traffic disruptions and ensure a safer festive atmosphere during the peak holiday period.
