PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya’s nightlife will be taking an enforced pause on alcohol sales this weekend, after city authorities announced a temporary ban in line with Thailand’s election laws.

Under the order, the sale, distribution, free provision, or serving of all alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, covering the legally mandated period surrounding Sunday’s vote.

The restriction applies across the entire city, with no exemptions for bars, restaurants, convenience stores, entertainment venues, or private gatherings.

Officials stressed that the ban is not limited to nightlife hotspots, but extends to all businesses and activities within Pattaya’s boundaries. Business operators have been warned to plan accordingly, as enforcement teams will be monitoring compliance.

City authorities urged residents, visitors, and operators to respect the measure, noting that violations could result in legal action under existing alcohol control regulations.

Nevertheless, seasoned Pattaya hands know the drill. Many Thais and foreign tourists are expected to stock up in advance, quietly enjoying their chosen refreshments at home or in hotel rooms, either alone or with close friends, as the city’s bars and shelves temporarily run dry.

The temporary alcohol ban, officials said, is intended to support public order and ensure compliance with national election regulations as Thai voters head to the polls on Sunday.

Violators are subject to penalties under the law, including imprisonment for up to 6 months, a fine of up to 10,000 THB, or both.
