New Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjawattana said tackling corruption, human trafficking and guns are his top priorities during his first meeting with government staffers.

Speaking Feb. 2, Chakorn told civil servants and representatives from the community that cracking down on guns – especially those common with petty criminals – was a top priority.

He said the government also must crack down on sex trafficking, as Thailand again is nearing judgment by the United States as its State Department prepares its annual Trafficking in Persons Report. Thailand was downgraded to the lowest level last year and faces trade sanctions this year if it does not lift itself out of Tier 3.

The district chief also stressed the government’s policy to eradicate and prevent corruption. A meeting will be called of relevant officials on how to prevent corruption in their jurisdictions.
