PATTAYA, Thailand – Laem Chabang Port has barred the public from approaching the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier after the nuclear-powered US Navy vessel docked at the port on Wednesday, citing strict security measures for the high-profile military ship. Veerachart Phuttharaksa, Deputy Director of Laem Chabang Port, said the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is an official US military vessel requiring the highest level of security. Authorities have therefore increased patrols and strengthened security measures both inside the port and around areas connected with the ship’s visit.
He said officials understood that members of the public were eager to see the giant aircraft carrier, but stressed that access to areas near the vessel could not be opened to visitors. “We sincerely apologise that we cannot welcome the public or allow people to come and see the ship because this is a matter of security,” Veerachart said.
He added that access to Laem Chabang Port is currently being managed under Chonburi’s integrated security measures. The area surrounding the USS Abraham Lincoln has been designated restricted territory, with the public prohibited from entering areas close to the ship. Veerachart also sent his best wishes to the US Navy personnel who will gradually leave the vessel in large numbers during the port visit. Members of the public interested in seeing the aircraft carrier have been encouraged to follow coverage through news outlets and other communication channels rather than attempting to enter the port area.
