SRI RACHA, Thailand – Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong led the first group of Thai officials aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), the US Navy’s nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, during its port visit to Laem Chabang. The governor was accompanied by Maj Gen Prasert Jaikla, commander of the 14th Military Circle, district chiefs and local officials during the visit on Sept 3. The tour was aimed at strengthening friendship and relations between Thailand and the United States while giving Thai officials an opportunity to see the capabilities of one of the world’s largest warships.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is powered by two nuclear reactors, allowing it to operate for extended periods without frequent refueling. The carrier is more than 333 meters long, roughly equivalent to three football fields placed end to end, and stands about as high as a 20-storey building.
The carrier can accommodate more than 5,000 sailors and personnel and can operate more than 80 aircraft, including fighter jets, helicopters and airborne early-warning aircraft.
The port visit also carries significance beyond defense and diplomatic relations, with thousands of US sailors expected to spend time in Chonburi and Pattaya during their shore leave. Local hotels, restaurants, transportation providers and other tourism-related businesses are expected to benefit from spending by the visiting personnel during their stay.
Chonburi authorities have coordinated with police, military personnel and administrative officials to maintain security and facilitate travel throughout the visit. Checkpoints and patrols have been arranged on land and at sea around the clock, while traffic management and transportation arrangements are being coordinated around Laem Chabang Port and major tourist areas. The province has also called on businesses, residents and visitors to help welcome the US personnel and maintain a positive image of Chonburi during the port call. The USS Abraham Lincoln is scheduled to remain in the area until Sept 6.
