Pattaya has extended the duration of registrations for hotels with no licenses until August to help operators get legal in time for the restart of foreign tourism.

Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome said April 24 at a meeting with local tourism groups that unregistered guesthouses and small hotels face a number of hurdles to complying with the Hotel Act that require more time to resolve.

Pattaya has been working with the Interior Ministry to survey how many hotels and guesthouses are operating illegally before foreign tourism is expected to resume in the fall.

The biggest obstacles are the requirements for environmental impact and health assessments to bring the structures into compliance with the Hotel Act, Building Control Act and other regulations.
