BANGKOK, Thailand – A helmet camera video showing a motorcyclist knocking a cigarette from a car passenger’s hand on a busy inner Bangkok road has drawn mixed reactions from social media users.
The footage was posted on July 10 by Facebook user “Nai Big Wisarut” and shows the motorcyclist riding alongside a car in heavy city traffic while a passenger extends a hand outside the window to smoke.
In the video, the rider reaches toward the passenger and swipes the cigarette away from the person’s hand, causing it to fall onto the road. The dramatic moment quickly spread online, with many viewers debating whether the action was justified. The motorcyclist later admitted that he may have overreacted, saying he acted emotionally and apologizing for his behavior. However, he explained that his concern was not only that the passenger was smoking with a hand outside the window, but that the cigarette was being squeezed, causing ash to scatter while vehicles were passing nearby.
He said flying ash and cigarette debris could pose a danger to other road users, including motorcyclists, cyclists and people travelling in open-backed vehicles, who could be exposed while passing close to the car. The post attracted thousands of comments, with some social media users supporting the rider’s frustration over cigarette smoke and ash affecting others on the road, while others questioned whether confronting another road user in traffic was the right approach.
Some commenters praised the action, saying many motorists have experienced irritation from people smoking from vehicle windows, while others compared the gesture to a teacher warning a student. The incident has renewed discussion about smoking behaviour on roads, personal responsibility and the risks of conflicts between road users in busy urban traffic.
