Tropical depression set to strengthen: heavy rain, floods, and landslides threaten 48 provinces.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued a warning as a tropical depression in the upper South China Sea is expected to intensify into a tropical storm, bringing heavy rain from August 30 to September 1. The system is forecast to affect 48 provinces, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides, and rapid runoff, particularly in mountainous and already saturated areas.

The depression’s center is currently located at 16.5°N latitude and 112.0°E longitude, with winds near the center reaching approximately 55 km/h, moving northwest. It is expected to make landfall in northern Vietnam on August 30 before weakening, though strong southwest monsoon winds will continue to fuel heavy rainfall in Thailand.

Affected provinces include northern regions like Phrae, Uttaradit, and Phetchabun; northeastern provinces such as Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and Sakon Nakhon; central provinces including Suphan Buri and Ratchaburi; eastern provinces like Prachinburi; and southern provinces including Chumphon, Phuket, and Phang Nga.

Authorities advise small boats to remain in port from August 30 to September 2 due to strong winds and high waves. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions, safeguard crops, and monitor announcements from the Meteorological Department. (TNA)
