PATTAYA, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a severe weather warning for widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across Thailand from May 29 to June 1, as an intensified southwest monsoon continues to strengthen over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. The warning highlights increased risk of flash floods, runoff from mountainous areas, and localized urban flooding due to continuous rainfall accumulation. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable zones, especially near waterways and low-lying areas, to remain alert.
Coastal conditions are also expected to deteriorate significantly. The upper Andaman Sea is forecast to experience waves of 2–3 meters, rising above 3 meters during thunderstorms, while the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves around 1–2 meters, becoming higher during storm activity. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have been advised to remain ashore. For popular coastal destinations such as Pattaya, the incoming system is expected to bring periods of heavy downpours and rough sea conditions, potentially affecting marine tourism, ferry services, and beach activities. Nearby island routes, including travel between Pattaya and Koh Larn, may also experience disruptions depending on sea state and visibility.
While rainfall may come in intermittent bursts, meteorologists caution that the cumulative effect over several days could increase flood risks in both urban and rural areas across eastern Thailand.
Residents and tourists are advised to monitor weather updates closely, avoid high-risk coastal activities during storm periods, and exercise caution when traveling in heavy rain.
