PATTAYA, Thailand — A body believed to be that of a Korean tourist who disappeared after falling into a flooded canal in Nongprue three days earlier was found in a canal near Siam Country Club Road on September 27.
The incident followed an accident in the early hours of September 24, when three foreign men reportedly attempted to cross through strong floodwaters in the Khlong Ta Yai area of Soi Nern Plab Wan, Moo 5, Nongprue. One man was swept away after falling into the canal, while his two companions survived and managed to leave the area.
At 6:06 p.m. on September 27, the Sawang Boriboon received a report from a member of the public who had spotted a body floating in a canal in Moo 6, near an abandoned power station off Siam Country Club Road. Rescue workers, Nongprue police, Tourist Police, Immigration Police, local authorities and a doctor from Pattaya Bhattamakhun Hospital were sent to the scene.
The body was found face down in the water in a heavily overgrown canal near a banana plantation behind the old power station. It was in an advanced state of decomposition. The clothing appeared similar to that worn by the Korean tourist who had fallen into Khlong Ta Yai three days earlier.
Oliver, 25, a fisherman who discovered the body, said he was looking for a suitable fishing spot when he noticed what appeared to be a human body floating face down in the canal. He alerted authorities after seeing the condition of the body and believing it could be the missing tourist.
Rescue workers recovered the body from the water and brought it to shore. Police photographed the scene and recorded evidence before the body was taken for a post-mortem examination and identification.
Authorities have not yet formally confirmed the man’s identity. Nongprue police, Tourist Police and Chonburi Immigration Police are continuing the identification process and will contact the victim’s relatives if the body is confirmed to be the missing Korean tourist.
