PATTAYA, Thailand – Thai authorities have arrested two Chinese nationals suspected of leading a major illegal surrogacy syndicate in China, police officials announced. Officers from the Central Investigation Bureau, the Crime Suppression Division, and the Immigration Bureau jointly raided a hotel in Pattaya, Chonburi province, to apprehend the suspects. The detainees were identified as Mr. Yan, 43, and Ms. Mi, 33. Both individuals were wanted under arrest warrants issued by the People’s Republic of China for operating an illegal medical business.
Following their flight to Thailand, both suspects have had their visas revoked and are currently held by the Immigration Bureau pending extradition to China. The operation followed a coordination request from Chinese authorities on July 2, after it was discovered the suspects had fled into the country. The crackdown was part of a joint effort with the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau’s transnational crime unit, which had initially issued warrants for the pair in early June.
According to investigators, Mr. Yan is suspected of being the head of the organization, responsible for managing the illegal facilities, operating an unlicensed medical clinic, and providing unauthorized artificial insemination and surrogacy services that generated significant financial turnover. Ms. Mi allegedly acted as a key shareholder and executive, handling marketing, expanding the customer base, and recruiting clients for the illicit operation. (TNA)
