CHIANG MAI, Thailand – A video showing police allowing a big-bike rider to pass through a late-night checkpoint without a helmet after a brief conversation has sparked debate online about equal enforcement of traffic laws, October 26.
The footage shows officers stopping a woman riding a large motorcycle without a helmet at a checkpoint in Chiang Mai. During their conversation, officers ask about her studies and an examination she says she has the following day.
The woman appears to ask for leniency, explaining that she has an exam the next day. An officer warns her about wearing a helmet before allowing her to continue her journey. The clip does not show officers checking her driving license, conducting an alcohol test or issuing a traffic ticket before she is allowed to leave.
After the video circulated on social media, viewers expressed differing opinions. Some supported the officers’ decision to issue a warning rather than a fine, viewing it as an opportunity for the rider to correct her behavior. Others questioned whether traffic rules were being applied consistently and whether other motorists would receive the same treatment under similar circumstances.
The incident has renewed discussion about police discretion at traffic checkpoints, particularly the need for clear and consistent procedures that maintain public confidence in traffic law enforcement.
The footage alone does not establish whether any checks took place outside the recorded portion of the encounter.
