BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand is bracing for heavy to very heavy rain from August 18–21, with the Meteorological Department warning of possible flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in the North and Northeast, while waves in the upper Andaman Sea could reach 2–3 meters. The Meteorological Department issued its third warning on Sunday at 5 p.m., saying a monsoon trough will extend across the North and upper Northeast, while a relatively strong southwest monsoon will cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
Residents in affected areas should watch for accumulated rainfall that could trigger flash floods and runoff, particularly in foothill areas, near waterways and in low-lying locations. People are advised to avoid routes prone to repeated flooding. The upper Andaman Sea is expected to experience relatively strong waves from August 19–21, with waves reaching 2–3 meters and exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand could see waves around 2 meters, rising above 2 meters in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
Boats in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should operate with caution and avoid areas experiencing thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore during the affected period. The Meteorological Department urged people to monitor weather updates and plan travel carefully. The next warning is scheduled for 5 a.m. on August 17.
