PATTAYA, Thailand – Diplomacy took on a community focus on October 5 as H.E. Nicola Pollitt, Britain’s newly appointed Ambassador to Thailand, joined expatriate representatives, charity organisations, business leaders and Thai officials at the Consular Contacts Reception at Courtyard by Marriott North Pattaya.
Hosted by the British Embassy, the reception offered an opportunity to welcome the ambassador and strengthen connections among those who support British nationals living in or visiting Pattaya. Local government support services were also represented, with the Embassy team expressing appreciation for their assistance and cooperation.
Joining the ambassador were British Consul Joanne Finnamore-Crorkin and Pattaya’s British Honorary Consul George Barrie, whose local connections form an important part of the Embassy’s engagement with the community.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Pollitt expressed her delight at serving in Thailand, describing it as a wonderful country. She affirmed her commitment to advancing the United Kingdom’s interests while strengthening the bonds of friendship and expanding economic cooperation between the two kingdoms.

The reception came early in Pollitt’s posting to Thailand. Her appointment was announced on June 4, 2026, with an August start, succeeding Mark Gooding OBE. She brings extensive experience in diplomacy, international affairs and consular work to her new responsibilities.
Pollitt joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2003 as Head of the Child Abduction Unit in the Consular Directorate. Her subsequent career included postings in Oslo and Kabul, crisis management responsibilities and service as Assistant Private Secretary to the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs and Development from 2014 to 2016.

She later served as Additional Director in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate before becoming British Ambassador to Nepal from 2019 to 2023. Before her Thailand appointment, she held the position of Director of International Affairs at the Cabinet Office.
Her Pattaya visit also included talks with Mayor Poramet Ngampichet at City Hall earlier that day. Discussions covered assistance for British nationals, road accidents, cannabis-related concerns and tourism cooperation. The mayor presented her with a symbolic “Key to the City” and reaffirmed Pattaya’s readiness to coordinate with the British Embassy on visitor welfare and safety.

During the evening reception, Consul Finnamore-Crorkin offered practical advice to British nationals living in Thailand, encouraging them to put their personal affairs and paperwork in order. This included making a will to ensure their wishes are clearly recorded and their families are properly provided for. Her message highlighted the importance of planning ahead to ease the practical and emotional burden on loved ones during difficult times.
She also stressed the importance of cooperation with police, hospitals, immigration officials, local authorities and community organisations when assisting British nationals in difficulty. Her remarks underscored how personal preparedness and a reliable local support network can help when unexpected problems arise.

The evening continued an established pattern of British Embassy engagement with Pattaya’s community. Alongside the City Hall discussions, it highlighted the relationships that support effective consular assistance, bringing diplomats, public officials, charities and businesses together through shared concern for the welfare of British residents and visitors.
For Pattaya’s British community and its Thai partners, the reception provided a welcome opportunity to meet the new ambassador, strengthen those connections and wish her a successful and rewarding tenure in Thailand.
