Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says the government will do everything possible to ensure Thai audiences can watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing cooperation with the private sector as negotiations over broadcasting rights continue.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged that the government will do everything possible to ensure Thai people can watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as discussions continue over how to secure broadcasting rights through cooperation with the private sector.

Anutin made the remarks after meeting Dr. Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruek, Chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), who had visited to update him on ongoing NBTC missions and policy matters.

When asked whether the 2026 World Cup broadcasting rights were discussed during the meeting, the Prime Minister confirmed that the issue was raised and that possible solutions are now being explored.

“We are looking at ways forward. I am not a football fan myself, so I only recently learned that the tournament is coming up in June. We must do our utmost to seek cooperation,” he said.

He noted that the government itself cannot directly purchase the broadcasting rights, but can play a coordinating role by facilitating discussions, supporting cooperation, and connecting relevant stakeholders, particularly the private sector.

At the same time, he acknowledged the financial pressures facing businesses, saying that the government understands the current economic conditions and does not want to place undue burden on private operators. However, he stressed that efforts will continue to find workable solutions.

When asked whether private sector participation would be the main approach, Anutin said details are still unclear, but confirmed that collaboration with the private sector is central to the plan.

Responding to questions on whether the process will be completed in time, the Prime Minister expressed confidence, stating that the government will “try its best to the fullest extent” to ensure Thai audiences can access the tournament.

The remarks come as Thailand continues to debate the structure for acquiring broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the NBTC, government agencies, and private sector partners expected to play key roles in finalizing the funding and distribution model.
