MC Ren Lexander presents British Consul Joanne Finemore-Crockin with the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation for taking time from her busy schedule to give Pattaya’s British Expats an opportunity to hear an update on what the Embassy can and cannot and cannot do for them.

PATTAYA, Thailand – On Wednesday, 29 October 2025, Joanne Finemore-Crockin, the British Consul at the British Embassy in Bangkok, addressed the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC), offering a candid and insightful look into the consular team’s work, the challenges they face, and the evolving needs of British nationals in Thailand.

Joanne described the consular section in Bangkok as a dedicated team of 23 staff, supported by honorary consuls in other regions. The team, she explained, is often under significant pressure, handling a wide range of cases from lost passports to emergencies involving British nationals in crisis.

She clarified the services the embassy provides, including issuing marriage affirmations, certifying copies of British passports, providing emergency travel documents, and assisting vulnerable British nationals—such as those in prison, hospital, or facing crisis situations. The team also supports victims of rape or sexual assault and handles child welfare and elderly care cases.

However, Joanne was clear about the consulate’s limitations: We do not give advice on UK state pensions, handle visa services, issue British passports, or provide financial support for hospital bills or visa fines, except in strict emergencies.

She highlighted several growing challenges. The number of British nationals detained in Thai prisons has tripled in three years, rising from 22 to 66. There has also been an increase in elderly and child welfare cases, as well as arrests related to cannabis since its legalization in Thailand.

In emergencies, the embassy operates a 24/7 call center and asks British nationals to register their presence during crises for effective communication and support. The consulate also collaborates with Thai authorities, tourist police, and local organizations to ensure the safety and well-being of British nationals.

Looking ahead, Joanne announced plans for workshops and partnerships with organizations like the Royal British Legion to better support the British community, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly. She emphasized the importance of creating resources and guides tailored to their needs.

Closing her presentation, Joanne expressed deep gratitude to Thai authorities and local partners, acknowledging their essential role in the consulate’s work. The consulate’s work is challenging but rewarding, focusing on helping the most vulnerable British nationals, she concluded, leaving the audience with a greater appreciation for the embassy’s vital role in Thailand.

Following the presentations, MC Ren Lexander brought everyone up to date on upcoming Club events followed by the Open Forum portion of the meeting where questions are asked and comments made about Expat living in Thailand, especially Pattaya.
