BANGKOK – The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused courts of first instance to make the biggest postponement of over 160,000 cases.

Sarawut Benjakul, secretary-general of the Office of the Judiciary, said the Judicial Administration Commission ordered all courts of first instance to postpone all trials earlier set during March 24 and May 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the order affected 163,620 cases. However, the order spared some cases, the postponement of which would damage parties in dispute.

The commission also advised the courts to work out online compromises.

From June onwards the courts may schedule trials outside official work hours or on holidays to clear the backlog, Mr Sarawut said. (TNA)
