BANGKOK, 27 June 2014  – Dr. Yongyuth Maiyalap, of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s public relations unit said that the project to repair old diesel carriages will be delayed as the diesel carriages are too old to repair, and new diesel trains should be purchased instead.

Dr. Yongyuth added that the NCPO believes that it will make more economic sense if the project is adjusted so that new carriages are bought instead, and now about 20 diesel trains have been purchased and are currently being checked for quality and efficiency.

The state railway of Thailand also is looking at the procurement of the passenger carriages, however, these projects needs to be reviewed in terms of the prices and the terms of reference, so the state railways of Thailand has to go back and adjust and review all these details and resubmit the projects to the NCPO’s public spending panel again.

With regards to the project to improve the railway infrastructure, Dr. Yongyuth revealed that no such project is being submitted to the NCPO now, however Dr. Yongyuth said that the project will include double railway tracks, but high speed trains haven’t been mentioned.
