BANGKOK, Thailand – The government clarified that Cell Broadcast alerts can be issued silently and targeted to specific areas during violent incidents to avoid disclosing the locations of individuals in hiding. Deputy government spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana stated that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation used the system after the shooting incident in Nonthaburi on August 7, 2026. The department sent an alert to mobile phones within about five kilometers of the school, advising people to avoid the area. This measure aimed to reduce public risk and help authorities respond effectively to the situation.
Officials emphasized that the Cell Broadcast system is highly adaptable and does not require users to register or download an application. Authorities can adjust the alert level, coverage area, and sound settings based on the threat. Loud alarms are used for natural disasters to prompt evacuation, while silent alerts are used for security threats to warn outsiders without putting those inside at risk. The deputy spokesperson urged the public to read alerts carefully, follow official instructions, avoid affected areas, and not share images or livestream official operations.
