BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Police has confirmed that legal action can be taken against foreign tourists if their behavior during a recent BTS Skytrain incident is found to violate Thai law, stressing that all visitors must respect local regulations while in the country. The statement follows a widely shared video showing a group of Italian tourists allegedly making loud disturbances on a BTS train and making offensive gestures toward Thai passengers. The incident sparked strong reactions online, with many questioning whether those affected could pursue legal action.
Police spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of the Royal Thai Police Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Piwpan said that if victims believe the actions or gestures involved constitute insults, humiliation, or an infringement on their dignity, they have the right to file a complaint under Thai law. He emphasized that because the incident occurred within Thailand, anyone who commits an offence in the country — whether Thai or foreign — is subject to Thai legal procedures and penalties.
Regarding the alleged loud behavior on the BTS, which is a public transport system, police said actions that cause public disturbance or violate service regulations may also be considered offences under relevant laws or rules.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong added that videos and images shared on social media can serve as important evidence for authorities when reviewing possible legal action. The issue has also raised public discussion over whether the tourists involved could face visa cancellation. The police spokesperson said such action falls under the authority of relevant immigration agencies. If an investigation finds that individuals meet legal criteria for immigration measures, authorities can proceed according to the law.
