Police detain the suspect in Silom after a box cutter attack on a Vietnamese woman in central Bangkok, with officers confirming he allegedly targeted the victim based on a stated bias.

BANGKOK, Thailand – A homeless man armed with a box cutter attacked a foreign woman in Bangkok’s Silom area on Sunday, June 28, injuring her before being quickly restrained by bystanders and police in a rapid response that prevented further harm.  Police said the incident occurred near Soi Silom 5, where the suspect allegedly slashed a 29-year-old Vietnamese woman, identified as Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, who works for an advertising company in Thailand. She sustained injuries but is now reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old “Film” or Easana, was described as a homeless man frequently seen sleeping on pavements and moving between locations in the area. Witnesses said he had previously displayed aggressive behavior toward passersby. After the attack, local residents and nearby patrol officers worked together to subdue the suspect at the scene. A box cutter believed to have been used in the assault was recovered as evidence.

During initial questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the attack and gave an unusual explanation for his actions, claiming he “does not like fat people,” according to police reports.

Authorities also said they are reviewing his background, including possible mental health issues and any involvement with drugs, as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have charged him with causing bodily harm, carrying a weapon in public without justification, and are continuing legal proceedings. Officials said the swift intervention helped prevent further injuries and reduced panic in the busy commercial district.
