BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Tuesday explained the cabinet’s decision to abruptly transfer of Phuket’s top leadership, stating that internal rifts cannot be allowed to disrupt the vital economic hub. The cabinet approved transferring Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn to Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Interior—a role Anutin noted fits his seniority. He will be replaced by Chotinrin Kerdsom. This follows an earlier order transferring Deputy Governors Theerapong Chuaichoo to Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Adul Chothong to Songkhla.

Anutin said the reshuffle, proposed by the Permanent Secretary, stemmed from localized conflicts. He cited leaked online clips and internal conflict that made cooperation impossible, emphasizing that Phuket’s massive revenue-generating economy requires a unified administration. Furthermore, the Prime Minister declared zero tolerance for beach encroachment, restriction of public spaces, and mafia intimidation. Stressing that these problems require immediate action, Anutin stated the government cannot afford to wait months for lengthy reports or investigation processes. (TNA)
