Iran national team signals readiness for FIFA World Cup 2026 but awaits formal guarantees from FIFA and host nations before confirming participation.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Iran has confirmed it is prepared to take part in the FIFA World Cup 2026, but only if it receives a set of 10 guarantees from FIFA and the tournament hosts — the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The announcement comes amid heightened political tension following recent conflicts involving the United States and Iran, which have raised concerns over Iran’s participation in the tournament. Reports suggest Iran’s group-stage matches are scheduled to be played entirely in the United States, while FIFA has stated there will be no changes to the existing hosting arrangements.

Tensions were further intensified after Iran’s football federation did not attend a recent FIFA meeting held in Canada in April, reportedly due to visa cancellations by Canadian authorities.

Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj has since confirmed that the national team will participate, but insists FIFA must comply with 10 specific conditions set by Iran.

Among the demands are guaranteed visa approvals for all players, staff, and selected officials, including individuals linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran has also requested assurances regarding the respectful treatment of its national symbols, including the flag and anthem, as well as enhanced security measures for the team throughout the tournament. FIFA and the host nations have not yet publicly responded to the list of conditions. The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
