BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is accelerating the restructuring of the national rail system to focus on fare reductions, safety enhancements, and network expansion. These measures aim to provide tangible benefits by improving the quality of life through more convenient and affordable transit options.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana announced that the Ministry of Transport is advancing rail transport development following the enactment of the Rail Transport Act B.E. 2568 on March 27, 2026. The measures were announced at the first Rail Transport Policy Committee meeting of the year on April 30.
To reduce the cost of living, the government is establishing fare ceilings to prevent unfair pricing and preparing to waive entry fees for transfers between rapid transit lines. Special benefits will be provided for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and veterans. New passenger protection regulations will require operators to compensate passengers for significant delays or trip cancellations to ensure fairness.
Regarding safety, the government is enforcing strict protocols by defining systems and safety zones and regulating the durability of rolling stock and infrastructure. All rail personnel must pass official certification, and operators must provide accident insurance to cover passenger damages. These steps aim to build greater public confidence in rail services.
The government is accelerating nationwide investment in urban mass transit and regional double-track railway projects to boost logistics efficiency and economic growth. By encouraging private sector participation, the administration aims to foster competition, reduce operational costs, and improve service quality.
