PATTAYA, Thailand — Authorities in Sattahip are stepping up efforts to track down suspects behind a series of roadside transformer thefts along key highway routes, raising concerns over public safety and infrastructure damage.
The alert was issued by the Chonburi Highway District 2, with the Sattahip Highway Subdivision confirming that multiple lighting transformers have been stolen in recent incidents.
The latest case, reported on April 30, involved criminals dismantling a transformer to extract copper components for resale. Remains of the damaged unit were later discovered on May 1 along Highway 332 in Plutaluang subdistrict, opposite a local beer venue.
Police from Plutaluang Station, working alongside highway officials, have launched an investigation, collecting evidence and reviewing the area to identify those responsible.
Authorities warn that such thefts not only cause financial losses but also pose serious risks to motorists due to reduced lighting along highways, especially at night.
In response, patrols have been increased and additional safety measures are being implemented to protect road users.
Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near roadside electrical poles or transformers. Reports can be made directly to local police or via the Department of Highways hotline at 1586, available 24 hours a day.
