PATTAYA, Thailand — Major road improvement works along Pattaya’s railway corridor are moving forward, but not without growing frustration from residents and motorists facing dust, delays, and disruption.
City officials have begun resurfacing both inbound routes toward Chonburi and Sattahip, targeting long-standing issues including potholes and deteriorating road conditions that have posed safety risks for years.
To reduce the impact of construction, crews have been spraying water regularly to control dust levels. However, many residents say the measures are inconsistent and insufficient, especially during hot daytime conditions when surfaces quickly dry out and dust returns.
Public reaction online has been mixed. While some acknowledge the long-term benefits of smoother, safer roads, others describe the project as chaotic, citing poor planning, extended road closures, and heavy congestion—particularly during the recent holiday period.
Several users complained that key access routes have been blocked for weeks, making it difficult to enter residential areas. Others questioned why construction is not being completed in phases, suggesting that closing long stretches simultaneously has amplified the disruption.
Health concerns have also been raised, with residents reporting irritation from dust and calling for more frequent water spraying and stricter dust control measures.
Traffic conditions have worsened in some areas, with bottlenecks forming along parallel routes. Some drivers have even been advised to use unconventional detours, further fueling criticism.
Despite the backlash, a number of residents urged patience, noting that infrastructure upgrades take time and could significantly improve driving conditions once completed.
Pattaya City has apologized for the inconvenience and advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance and exercise caution when traveling through construction zones. Authorities also encouraged the public to report issues via the city’s 24-hour hotline at 1337.
As the project continues, the challenge remains balancing long-term development with the immediate impact on daily life in one of Thailand’s busiest coastal cities.
