Thailand, Laos join forces to safeguard Luang Prabang’s heritage amid rising tourism pressures

Minister Suchart Chomklin leads talks in Luang Prabang to enhance environmental management, heritage conservation, and sustainable tourism, with both sides agreeing on a joint action plan and expanded knowledge-sharing efforts.

LUANG PRABANG, Laos – Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin has led a delegation to Luang Prabang, Laos, to advance cooperation on environmental management and the preservation of the city’s World Heritage status. The visit included senior ministry officials, who met with the provincial governor and local authorities overseeing culture, tourism, and environmental affairs.



Discussions addressed environmental management in the historic urban area, including waste disposal, wastewater treatment, and pollution control within conservation zones. Both parties also examined how to balance tourism growth with the protection of cultural and natural value, while enhancing environmental practices at the local level.

The talks also covered plans to expand knowledge and technology transfer in natural resource management, with emphasis being given on community-based approaches. Luang Prabang was identified as a living heritage city, where long-term preservation requires continuous coordination and careful oversight.


Following the meetings, both sides agreed to develop a joint action plan to support knowledge-sharing among officials and improve environmental management. The cooperation is expected to boost ties between Thailand and Laos while supporting international standards and long-term sustainability for World Heritage sites. (NNT)
