BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Internal Trade has affirmed it is maintaining price controls on 59 regulated goods amid tensions in the Middle East, with officials confirming that no requests for price increases have been submitted. Authorities are urging businesses to keep prices stable to help ease pressure on household expenses.
The department, led by Director-General Wittayakorn Maneenetr, said it is closely tracking production costs, especially for goods affected by fluctuations in global oil prices. Monitoring covers key categories including fresh food, agricultural products, essential consumer goods, canned food, beverages, and packaging and construction materials.
Officials said supplies of chemical fertilizers remain adequate, and preparations are underway for a Green Flag Fertilizer campaign to help lower farmers’ costs. A three-tier monitoring system is also in place, with frequent inspections for sensitive items and periodic checks for other goods.
Authorities warned that unjustified price increases, hoarding, or refusal to sell goods could result in penalties of up to 7 years in prison, a fine of up to 140,000 baht, or both. Consumers are advised to purchase only necessary quantities and report irregularities through the 1569 hotline. (NNT)
