Storm clouds gather over Songkran fun – Tourists in Pattaya are urged to stay alert as summer storm warnings coincide with the height of the water-splashing festival.

PATTAYA, Thailand – As Songkran festivities begin to draw crowds to Pattaya’s beaches and streets, the Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning urging residents and tourists to brace for changing weather conditions. While the popular coastal city has been experiencing its typical hot and humid summer, weather authorities say upper Thailand — including areas in and around Pattaya — may soon be hit by summer storms.

The warning outlines the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and even hail in some regions of northern and northeastern Thailand. These conditions are the result of a moderate high-pressure system from China pushing down over the northeastern part of the country and the South China Sea. At the same time, hot air and southwesterly winds continue to affect much of the upper region, increasing the risk of severe weather.

Although Pattaya is not expected to face hail, the city may experience sporadic heavy rainfall and strong winds during the Songkran holiday. Tourists enjoying the famous water-splashing celebrations, especially in beachside areas and crowded streets, should take precautions as storms can develop quickly and without warning. Local authorities have also recommended avoiding outdoor activities in open spaces or near unstable structures like large trees or billboards during stormy conditions.

In southern Thailand, the west coast is forecast to see heavy rain in certain areas, while both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will face moderate waves ranging from one to two meters. During thunderstorms, waves could rise above two meters. The Meteorological Department advises small boats to remain ashore in storm-prone zones.

The weather also brings implications for public safety and travel. Authorities are encouraging people to avoid low-lying routes that frequently flood and to monitor updates closely, especially during the “Seven Dangerous Days” of Songkran. Farmers across the country are also being urged to protect crops, livestock, and agricultural infrastructure from potential damage.

Despite the vibrant celebrations underway in Pattaya, this reminder underscores the importance of caution as natural elements could quickly turn festive fun into dangerous situations. Tourists stepping out of hotels to join the Songkran fun are advised to carry rain protection and stay alert to any sudden shifts in the weather.

From water fights to weather alerts – While the Songkran spirit heats up the streets, the Thai Meteorological Department warns of thunderstorms and strong winds across upper Thailand.
