PATTAYA, Thailand – As the Songkran festival kicks off, Pattaya authorities are stepping up efforts to reduce road accidents and save lives during what is traditionally one of the most dangerous times on Thailand’s roads.
In a proactive move to encourage road safety, police officers from the Pattaya City Police Station—led by Pol. Col. Anek Sarathongyu, Superintendent of Pattaya Police Station, along with Pol. Lt. Col. Siriwat Katchamat, Deputy Superintendent, Pol. Lt. Col. Panupong Nimsuwan, Traffic Inspector, and local traffic volunteers—conducted a public campaign on April 12 by distributing motorcycle helmets to riders who were caught without them in front of the station.
Rather than issuing fines, officers offered helmets as a “Songkran gift”, aiming to raise awareness about safety and reduce fatalities caused by motorcycle accidents—one of the leading causes of death during the Thai New Year celebrations.
Pol. Col. Anek emphasized that this initiative is in line with the Royal Thai Police’s national policy to enhance public safety, especially during Songkran, when road traffic spikes significantly and alcohol consumption tends to increase. He urged all road users, especially motorcyclists, to prioritize their own safety by wearing helmets and refraining from drinking and driving.

“The majority of road accidents involve motorcycles. We care about people’s safety and want them to get home safely during Songkran. That’s why we’re handing out helmets instead of tickets—it’s our way of reminding everyone how important it is to protect themselves,” said Pol. Col. Anek.
The campaign drew attention from locals and tourists alike, with many expressing appreciation for the gesture. Smiles and gratitude were evident as people accepted the helmets and thanked the officers for their concern and kindness.
As Pattaya continues to attract tens of thousands of visitors during the Songkran period, local authorities are also increasing checkpoints, deploying more traffic officers, and promoting awareness campaigns to help make Songkran 2025 not just fun, but safe for everyone on the road.
