Sparey triumphs in 4th Classroom Charity Classic

140 golfers turned out at Green Valley in Rayong for what has become one of Pattaya’s most popular major tournaments (140 golfers can’t be wrong).

At the time of going to press, with the final figures still coming in, the organizers Orchid Tour and Trading expect to easily exceed last year’s donation to the Banglamung Boys Orphanage, which is what this competition is all about.

The course, which is one of the toughest in the area, was in excellent condition, unlike Jackson, one of Pattaya’s old hands (some say with as even older body) who managed to shoot a gross, gross (no misprint). In fact his playing partner Lumpy Russell stated that it was the most gross gross he’d ever seen grossed. Coincidentally, his locker number was 144. Luckily, they haven’t opened the new extension as locker numbers there go up to 280. Unfortunately, Jackson was unable to make the presentation afterwards to collect the booby prize, so it went to Joey Klein who scraped together 19 Stableford points. Better luck next year Joe.

At the other end of the field, things got very tight with four players vying for fourth and fifth place on 38 points. Making it on count back was the ever present Svein Vistung in fifth. Stephen Beard took fourth, winning a bottle of Remy and a calendar.

Jim Boyd, who had accumulated 30 points after only 12 holes, couldn’t keep it up and finished with 39 points, winning himself a trophy, a box of golf balls and a bottle of Johnny Black for his troubles.

Second place, also on 39 points, beating Jim on count back, went to Neil "Candid" Cameron, the fashion dodger from Aberdeen who won a trophy, a putter and a bottle of Dom Perignon from the Classroom cellar. Well done Neil.

The overall champion and winner of a trophy, a golf bag and another bottle of D.P. was Joe Sparey with an unequalled 40 Stableford points. Very well done Joe.

The team prize went to a very international quartet with 142 points, consisting of Ebrahim from the Middle East, Arthur Bailey from the UK, Mick O’Meara from Ireland and Bernie Tuppin, the mighty midget from Oz, who all won a trophy, a calendar and a special mystery prize.

The ladies long drive went to Annie Anderson who also bought a 2 night stay in a luxury hotel in Chiang Mai with return flights for two people in the auction for 18,000 baht. The money went to the Orphanage. Nice one Annie!

Ladies long putt was won by Edith Villadsen, and the Ladies Champion with 32 points was Marisa Hasila.

The men’s long drive was won by Paul Butler and the long putt by Rick Foulds.

Nearest the pins on the par 3s went to Kerrin Muckart, Ged Mason, Steve Mascari and Larz Lantz, four worthy winners.

The organizers would like to thank L’Opera Restaurant on the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate, Delaney’s Pattaya, Barry (the book) Tregurthu, Green Valley Rayong and Pattaya Sports Club for their sponsorship. Also thank you to Ray Ryan who rang the bell to celebrate his winnings. The bill came to 9,500 baht which the Classroom donated to the Orphanage.

The final mention must go to Stan Fry, Chairman of Orchid Tour and Trading and owner of the Classroom One. Stan, who plays off 8, had 26 points amassed after 13 holes when he played one of playing partner’s balls by mistake. This incurred a 2 shot penalty and resulted in the next shot being a "hack". He then had no choice but to pick up as he could not score on the hole, which finished any chances he had of winning. Bad luck, Stan, but next year remember to leave other people’s balls alone!

Lewiinski’s Sunday Competition

Lewiinski’s held it’s first official PSC competition on Sunday at Noble Place Golf Club. The course was in superb conditioned as reflected by the winning Stableford totals.

Lou Naftlain won the inaugural contest with 3 birdies and 38 points. Steve Mascari was second with 37 points and Brad Doyle took third on count back from Sven Vistung with 36 points.

All PSC members are welcomed to join the Lewiinski’s golf outings departing on Sundays and Tuesday’s at 10 a.m. from Lewiinski’s, Soi Pattayaland 1. Please sigh up in advance if transportation is required.

Spontaneous combustion

Alan’s Flames and Rick’s Heat ignited the excitement at the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 21. Before the smoldering embers died, each team walked away with a victory.

The Heat came out smokin’ in the first game and put up three in the first inning behind back-to-back dingers from Maple Leaf Rick and Dick (The Stick) Cagg.

The Flames pulled even in the top of the third thanks to timely hitting by J. J. John and Marc (The Shark).

The Heat added one each in the bottom of the third and fourth with Hollywood Sterling and M. J. (Coffee) Jim each producing an RBI.

The Flames, however, would not die down and again tied the game with two in the fifth behind RBI from Alan (Y.B.) Baa and Esso Mike.

The Flames’ defense dampered the Heats’ offense, thanks to sparkling plays by Mark (The Natural) and Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg.

In the top of the seventh, Calvin (Armani) Klein smacked a double to left scoring two, and later scored on a single to center to give the Flames a hotly contested eight to five win.

The nightcap was somewhat less competitive as the Heat erupted for five in the first with hits by Montreal (Uppa US) Robert and Seminole Joe doing most of the damage.

The Flames came back with three in the bottom half of the inning, but the Heat added one in the second and four in the third behind G’day David’s three run homer.

Still undaunted, the Flames exploded for four in the bottom of the third as Craig (The Hitman) Lewis smacked a three run homer to right.

The game remained close as each team added one in the fifth, but in the top of the sixth the Heat scorched the earth for eleven runs, triggering the ten run rule and mercifully ending the game. Final score: Heat 22 - Flames 8.

The competitive fires burn each Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the meticulously maintained ball field at Pattaya School #7 just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station on Sukhumvit Road. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome.

Handicaps with Pattaya Sports Club

The procedure for setting and maintaining a handicap for a Pattaya Sports Club member will, in the future, be based only on returns from PSC Competitions and Tournaments. The procedure is as follows:

1. A PSC Member with no prior handicap with PSC, or any other recognised Club or Society, must have returned 10 completed scorecards, playing along in a PSC Golf Competition or Tournament, for a handicap to be set. This will be based on the lowest gross score returned.

2. A PSC Member who has not had a handicap with PSC before, but has a handicap from a Home Club, will play off his lowest current handicap from that Home Club. The handicap will be entered in the PSC Computer only after the member has collected 10 scorecards in PSC Competitions or Tournaments, and the result of that entry will be the new PSC current handicap. A handicap certificate is required from the Member's Home Club.

3. A PSC Member who has previously had a PSC Handicap, but arrives with a more recent (lower or higher) handicap from his Home Club, will have that handicap entered into the computer. The member will play off that handicap, and subsequent PSC Competition or Tournament scorecards entered will adjust that handicap accordingly. A handicap certificate is required from the Member's Home Club.

4. A PSC Member is required to return a minimum of 10 PSC Competition or Tournament scorecards annually for his PSC Handicap to be maintained.

Handicap Adjustments: Handicaps may be adjusted at the discretion of the Handicap Committee, or the Competition/Tournament Organiser of the day in consultation with the Handicap Committee, under the provision of the Rules of General Play. It is then the responsibility of the player to declare his new handicap whenever he plays thereafter.

Note: i) Non-compliance with any of the Handicap Procedure Rules may result in loss of handicap and/or PSC Golf membership.

ii) To enter PSC Golf Competitions and Tournaments, and have a PSC Golf handicap, a player must be a paid-up member of Pattaya Sports Club.

Beard recovers victory

PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Wednesday, February 17 - Great Lake Golf & Country Club (Bogey)

1st: Stephen Beard, 7 up
2nd: Terry Minnighen, 6 up
3rd: Mark Gorda, 6 up

Stephen Beard, playing off 17, shot an 82 and led the charge of under par rounds that routed Great Lake in a Bogey competition on Wednesday, February 17. Stephen won his match against the course by seven up, but the wonder was that he was even playing golf, much less playing great golf.

On the previous Friday, Stephen went into the hospital with infected tonsils and a 104 degree fever. He had to be replaced on the Pattaya Sports Club Ryder Cup team that played against the American Embassy Golf Association on Sunday and Monday, February 14 and 15. Stuffed with antibiotics and wearing a five day beard, Stephen looked like an Ash Wednesday repentant after a week of Carnival when he showed up at the Hare House on Wednesday morning. Whatever drugs the hospital had given him, they must have helped his golf game as Stephen shot 41 on both the front and back to lead the pack of seven golfers who shot under par.

In second place was County Down's very own Terry Minnighen who shot an 81 off his sixteen handicap and won his match against the course six up. Also at six up was Canadian Mark Gorda, who could rightfully feel dismayed at shooting a seven under par 86 and then finding himself in third place. That could also be said of Bob Patterson and Terry Summers, who both finished at five up and tied for fourth place. What do you have to do to win in this place?
