Raimon Land, Ocean Marina Regatta
Salutes His Majesty the King
By Peter Cummins, Pattaya Mail
The Second Top of the Gulf Regatta has arrived and what a nautical event it
will be to celebrate the 60th anniversary of HM the King’s accession to the
Thai Throne. The world’s longest-reigning Monarch, a Gold-Medal regional
games helmsman himself at the Fourth South East Asian Peninsular Games,
December 1967, will be honoured by the biggest fleet ever assembled in the
Kingdom for a regatta.
It is appropriate that one of the principal championships, within the
framework of the week’s tightly-packed calendar, is the annual Coronation
Cup, for the permanent trophy.
Sponsors – essential to any event
Scheduled to be sailed from 03 – 07 May, out off the Ocean Marina (see
programme below), this sailing extravaganza, sponsored by Raimon Land and
the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, will also carry the logos of many companies
dedicated to the promotion of marine sport in the Pattaya-Jomtien area, and,
by extension, the Kingdom itself.

HEINEKEN BEER, long a champion of many sports, especially yacht racing, has
several Royal Varuna Hobie Cat 16s, carrying the Heineken logo.

GULF CHARTERS, operating out of the Ocean Marina, is a leading advocate of
yacht racing and cruising in the Northern Gulf and stands enthusiastically
behing the Second TOG.

NEIL PRYDE, one of the world’s best sailmakers, ensconced in Hong Kong,
would be the living proof of the efficacy of his own products. Participating
with great success in many regional regattas and events, winning the Phuket
King’s Cup on three occasions.

QBE INSURANCE, another perennial supporter of regattas, starting with the
Phuket King’s Cup, the Koh Samui and Phuket Race Week events and now, the
TOG events. Appropriately enough QBE started out as an insurer of vessels
and has now branched out to the bigger insurance field.

THAI AIRWAYS, the national carrier, has constantly answered the call to move
sailors, jury, committee-men and the press from around the globe to
Thailand, to help promote the particular event in question and Thailand as a
whole.

COCA COLA is a legendary sight at many, many sporting events, and is
particularly dedicated to helping juniors along the way to the big ranks.
The big red tent is a refuge for many youngsters – and the not-so-youngsters
who seek the ‘pause that refreshes’!

BANGKOK PATTAYA HOSPITAL, recently elected as one of the best “medical
tourist” venues in the Kingdom, is always ready to help the rare cases of
injury in yacht racing. But, it CAN happen and to see the BPH tent at the
venue is always re-assuring to the sailors, the spectators, the managers –
and, the DRINKERS!

KASIKORN BANK, also a long-time backer of marine sports will have its
‘mobile ATM machine’ prominently displayed, to offer its usual top-class
service. But, one can readily observe that the wheels are rather well
fastened. One cannot be too cautious when there are yachties lurking around!
Apart from the regular management of the regatta, it is jointly organized by
the Ocean Marina and Royal Varuna Yacht Clubs, Pattaya City, the Sattahip
Naval Base, the national authority, the Yacht Racing and the Windsurfers
Associations of Thailand.

THE TOURISM AUTHORITY OF THAILAND, too, regards the development of the
marine sector as vitally important to the resurgence of tourism in the
Kingdom, after such colossal set-backs as the 2004 tsunami, and stamps a
strong TAT imprimatur onto the week-long sailing fiesta.
Encouraged by last year’s successful inaugural regatta, this year will again
be jointly sponsored by Raimon Land and the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, which
will be the host club, as well as the site for the First Pattaya Boat Show
Premier Living, which will be held at the Marina, starting tomorrow 29 April
and extending through the third of May.
According to the founder and principal organizer, William J. Gasson, this
event will be “a gathering of most of the racing classes of sail-boats in
the Kingdom”. There could well be some 400-500 Thai and foreign sailors,
Bill added, “racing some 250 craft, including locally-based boats from the
Gulf, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, Australia, UK and New Zealand – a
spread of more than 15 nationalities”
A feature this year will be a big fleet of wind-surfers, racing on a course
to the North of the Marina. A special treat will be some spectacular kite
surfing, on Saturday and Sunday off the Marina.
Otherwise, all the action, especially the large fleet of Optimist dinghies
expected (80 plus) will be visible from the deck and special tents set up at
the top of the breakwater. Some spectator press boats will be available at
the site.
The most numerous fleet will be the Optimists and through the dedicated
work of Royal Varunians, Kevin and Malee Whitcraft, Ralph Tye, Dave
Littlejohn and Khun James, the Royal Varuna manager, all have one and
sometimes two children enrolled in junior training programmes and much
competitive sailing.
One other feature, especially in view of His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee on
the Thai Throne, will be the introduction of a fleet of 10 Motts – the tiny
light-weight dinghy adapted and designed from the International Moth Class –
ideally suited for the lighter Thai physique - by His Majesty the King.
Long known as the “Mod” (Ant), the Yacht Racing Association’s officer,
Anirut Posakrisna, who has done so much to promote sailing – especially in
the smaller craft - insists the craft is ‘Mott’, not ‘Mod”. But, that is
purely academic. The huge crowds expected at the Ocean Marina this week will
see the real craft in action.
All starts will be clearly visible from the Ocean Marina fore-shore and the
social ambience will be unprecedented.
One other factor that Bill notes will positively affect the 2006 TOG
Regatta is that last weekend, the Thailand National Hobie Cat Championships,
were sailed off Varuna. This exciting event, which brings sailors from all
around the region, will probably have a “knock-on” effect with many staying
on to join the 2006 TOG.
With incorporation of the Thailand Optimist National Championships, there
could be upwards of 80 juniors (under-16-year-olds) competing and the annual
Coronation Cup, supported by Princess Galyani is also being raced
concurrently. Gary Baguley has mustered almost 20 Platus for this
Championships. This agile, challenging 8-metre keelboat, was designed by
Bruce Farr - arguably the world’s best naval architect - especially for Thai
waters, The Platu itself is a native mackerel-type fish, inhabiting mostly
the waters of the Western Gulf.

The Pattaya Mail, the Pattaya Blatt and Pattaya Mail on TV are also
co-sponsoring this year’s regatta.
